When Stephen walks into the Inver Grove Heights AF, he arrives ready to put in some serious work. Coach Sou, who works with Stephen during his sessions, says, “Stephen has been one of our most consistent training members over this last year and continues to strive forward every day.”
Stephen has cerebral palsy, which creates daily challenges for him inside and outside the gym. When he started going to Anytime Fitness, his goal was to get stronger and build muscle so he wouldn’t have to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Overcoming Challenges
“Within the first couple months we knew Stephen was a fast learner and wanted to be challenged,” says Coach Sou.
Now, Stephen works with Coach Sou multiple times a week, focusing on functional training and exercises like box jumps, squats, walking on the treadmill, and using the stair climber. “Our ideas were limitless because he never limited himself,” says Coach Sou. “Stephen has never once in the gym said the words, ‘I can’t.’ He has always given us his very best effort and said, ‘I’ll try it.’”

Over the past few years, Stephen has improved his range of motion, balance, and coordination while building up strength. He increased the weight he could lift from 3 pounds to 25 pounds, and he has walked up to 3 miles on the treadmill. Perhaps the most impressive: Stephen can push a sled the full length of the gym turf — with three trainers on it.
Those who know Stephen know that he is a man of his word, and he never backs down from a challenge. Stephen says, “Sometimes my dad will tell me, ‘It’s probably too difficult for you. You won’t be able to do it.’ This makes me want to prove him wrong.” His dad laughs, “It’s all part of my plan.”
Everyday Wins
Since starting to work out, Stephen says everyday tasks — like getting in and out of the car, going up and down the stairs, or picking up smaller and heavier objects — are easier.
The gym has improved Stephen’s life in other ways, too; his time in the gym helps him relieve stress, sleep better at night, and most importantly, meet others who are working to improve their health. “Over the past year, Stephen has connected with many members,” mentions Coach Sou. “Many people have been inspired by his journey, seeing his relentless dedication and positive attitude.”
For Stephen, his impact on other people is what motivates him to keep going back. He says, “People are inspired by me to keep trying.” His advice for others: “There’s always going to be someone who is better than you. But if you have a passion for it and you want to do it, nobody can tell you no.”
