For Coach Marquise, being in the fitness setting is nothing new. In fact, it’s where he feels the most at home. As a Manager and Coach at Anytime Fitness in Cliffside Park, NJ, he loves being able to pass along positive energy and inspiration to members, both new and experienced. Let’s get to know Coach Marquise as he describes for us how he passes on his passion for fitness to his clients and members!
From Division 1 Athlete to AF Coach
What led you to be so passionate about fitness?
Fitness has been my passion and love for as long as I can remember! I played sports since I was seven years old. I really excelled in Track & Field in high school and was blessed to receive a scholarship to North Carolina A&T, a Division 1 university. Having over 12 years’ experience in athletics and training, becoming a coach was a natural fit. I believe I was born to coach!
How did you become a Coach at Anytime Fitness?
I became a coach in a kind of unique way: Mike and Adam, the owners, started out as my Personal Training clients at another gym. They mentioned they’d be opening an Anytime Fitness gym and sold me on the idea of coming on board as their Fitness Director and Lead Coach. Best career move ever!!
What do you love about being a Coach?
I love the energy that a great coach can pass on during a session. The coach must set the tone! I also believe that seeing the progression that members go through and watching them achieve their fitness goals is amazing. As a Coach and leader, it’s incredible.
Marquise + AF = The Perfect Match!
There are many places you could work — Why Anytime Fitness?
I love Coaching at Anytime Fitness for a few reasons: The first reason is the friendly, family-like atmosphere we have created at our club. A lot of my clients are now friends for life. We hang out at sporting events, happy hours… I even performed at the wedding of one of my clients! Secondly, Anytime Fitness has so many different resources for coaches to stay in contact with the members. Coaching at AF goes well beyond the actual coaching work we do in the actual gym.
What are some qualities you have that make you an effective Coach?
I am very personable and approachable. Smooth, swag, but humble. I can be a bit loud at times! I am smart and well-rounded in all aspects of fitness, so I am prepared to train my clients for all types of goals. To be a leader you also need to be motivating.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I love Taylor Swift. I hate the stair climber…. with a passion. I definitely have the best drip in the gym (mostly Nike), and I can box jump 52 inches.
